Marijuana is one of the most frequently abused recreational drugs in the United States. In recent years, several states have decriminalized or legalized the possession of marijuana in certain circumstances, but the fact remains that this drug has been associated with a variety of short- and long-term dangers. The altered sensory perception, impaired coordination, and deficient judgment that are immediate results of marijuana ingestion put users at risk for several negative outcomes, including physical injuries, psychological distress, and legal problems. For chronic users, THC, the primary psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, interacts with the brain in ways that may pose the risk of structural damage to the amygdala and hippocampus.
For decades, Twelve Oaks Recovery Center has worked closely to help individuals overcome the compulsion to abuse marijuana, regain control over their impulses and actions, and successfully pursue long-term recovery. With effective comprehensive programming that can be customized to meet the unique needs of each person who chooses to heal with us, Twelve Oaks is uniquely prepared to provide the solutions that can transform the anguish of chronic substance abuse into the promise of a healthy drug-free future.
Helping a Loved One or Family Member Get Treatment
Discovering that a person you care about has a substance abuse problem can be a devastating experience. But when the drug in question is marijuana, you may be tempted to express relief that your loved one is not involved with a more dangerous substance. Resist that temptation. Marijuana abuse can pose a significant threat to your loved one’s healthy future. But you can help. Please consider the following:
- First, learn about the true risks and dangers of marijuana abuse. Be sure to get information from reputable sources such as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), or the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
- Educate yourself about the nature of chemical dependency and the ways that addiction can impact virtually all aspects of a person’s life. In order to provide the best possible support, it is essential that you develop a greater understanding of the challenges that your loved one is experiencing.
- Learn about the types of treatment that have helped others whose problems were similar to your loved one’s issues, and identify specific programs that appear to be best suited to meeting his or her unique needs.
- Express your concerns to your loved one. Share the information that you have learned, and listen to his or her feedback without judgment or recrimination. Remain calm, and remember that your goal is not to win an argument, but to help your loved one.
- When your loved one is ready to get help, volunteer to assist with appointments, travel arrangements, childcare, and other logistics that will free him or her up to focus on getting better.
Finally, remember that overcoming a substance abuse problem is a long process that will involve both successes and setbacks. Plan to be a consistent positive presence in your loved one’s life every step of the way.

Types of Treatment Offered at Twelve Oaks Recovery Center
Serving Florida for more than 30 years, Twelve Oaks Recovery Center has been dedicated to providing world class rehabilitation care to men and women who are in need of rehab treatment for an addiction to alcohol or other drugs, including marijuana. We believe in providing highly individualized treatment that is catered to meet the unique needs of each one of our patients. We strive to provide treatment in an atmosphere of trust, honesty, and responsibility, wherein patients are the top priority and they can feel confident that they are receiving the most optimal quality of care possible as they work towards overcoming their marijuana abuse problem.
In order to cater treatment to meet the specific needs of each patient, Twelve Oaks is pleased to offer three specialized treatment tracks that can be incorporated into a patient’s personalized treatment plan. These tracks include Proclaim, our Christian track, Aspire, our PTSD recovery track, and Resilience, our addiction-free chronic pain management track. A patient’s participation in these specialized tracks will be determined based on his or her individual needs and presenting concerns.
In addition to these specialized tracks, our center incorporates the following interventions that may be included into the comprehensive treatment plans that are provided to every patient in our residential inpatient program:
Medically monitored detoxification: When patients arrive at Twelve Oaks with drugs still in their systems, participating in medically monitored detox may be the most beneficial first step in their recovery process. We offer high-level detox services that are delivered under the direction of an ASAM-certified addictionologist, and patients are monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by our compassionate nursing staff. A wide range of medications are available for use, but they will only be implemented into a patient’s treatment plan when they are deemed clinically appropriate for medically managing the detoxification process and the side effects that can arise from detox. Each patient’s medical situation is taken into account prior to his or her participation in detox, and appropriate accommodations are made to ensure that all interventions are managed safely.
Medication management: For individuals who are battling symptoms of a co-occurring mental health condition in addition to their addiction to marijuana, the use of certain medications may be beneficial in helping to alleviate some of their distress. The implementation of any medications, however, is always determined on a patient-to-patient basis. Appointments with a psychiatrist are scheduled solely based on need, and medication management services will be offered following the recommendations of the attending psychiatrist.
Individual therapy: All patients have the opportunity to take part in individual therapy sessions with their assigned counselors at a minimum of once per week. Additional sessions can be added on as-needed or as-requested basis. These individual sessions are designed to be a time for patients to meet in a private setting with their counselors to discuss their treatment goals and process through any setbacks that may arise as they work towards overcoming their marijuana addiction. Additionally, counselors often incorporate various experiential therapy options into their individual sessions with patients. Such options may include guided imagery, art, recreational activities, psychodrama, yoga, and participation in beach activities like fishing, swimming, and kayaking.
Family therapy: Knowing the importance of family involvement when someone is battling an addiction to marijuana, Twelve Oaks provides patients and their family members with at least one family therapy session during their time in treatment. Each patient’s counselor will determine if additional family sessions are necessary or would be a beneficial addition to each patient’s individualized treatment plan. Upon this determination, appropriate arrangements for further sessions will be made.
Group therapy: Group therapy is a large part of the rehab process and therapeutic experience here at Twelve Oaks. Patients have the opportunity to participate in two process groups and three educational groups each day, Monday through Friday. On Saturdays and Sundays, patients participate in a total of five educational groups, including recreational therapy on Saturday and a spirituality group on Sunday. Patients also have the option of attending a local church on Sundays as part of their spirituality group. There are a variety of topics that are covered throughout the different educational groups, which may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Relapse prevention
- Stages of change
- 10 principles of change
- Dealing with stress and emotions
- Addiction as a brain disease
- Anger management
- Communication skills
- Triggers and cravings
- Conflict resolution
- Spirituality enrichment study
- Working the 12-Step program
- Big Book study
Experiential therapeutic activities are also frequently incorporated into the group therapy sessions. Such activities can include psychodrama, yoga, guided imagery, art, the low ropes course, recreational therapy, and participation in various beach activities, such as volleyball, kayaking, fishing, swimming, and communal gatherings around a bonfire.
At Twelve Oaks, we recognize that recovery from marijuana addiction is an ongoing process that does not end upon completion of residential inpatient treatment. For this reason, our staff works diligently with each patient to create a thorough discharge plan so that appropriate continuing care services can be put into place prior to his or her completion of inpatient treatment. Twelve Oaks is pleased to offer a partial hospitalization program (PHP) and intensive outpatient program (IOP) that patients may step-down to once their time in residential inpatient treatment is complete. If patients are ready to return home, the staff at Twelve Oaks will work with them to ensure that appropriate supportive and follow-up services are accessible.
If you or your loved one needs help in overcoming an addiction to marijuana, look no further than Twelve Oaks Recovery Center. We will do everything in our power to help you embark on the road to recovery with the confidence necessary for achieving lasting healing.
