Remembering Veterans

Twelve Oaks Recovery Center honored those who have given their lives in support of our freedom by celebrating Memorial Day in a very special way.

In recognition of Memorial Day, a poster was hung in a prominent location in the facility so that patients and staff could write on it and share any memories or thoughts they have related to this special holiday. More than 15 people wrote a special message on the poster remembering loved ones and fellow soldiers who have served.

Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of an organization of Union veterans established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. It was not until after World War I, however, that the day was expanded to honor those who have died in all American wars. In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by an act of Congress.

To ensure the sacrifices of America’s fallen heroes are never forgotten, in December 2000, the U.S. Congress passed, and the president signed into law, “The National Moment of Remembrance Act”. The Act encourages all Americans to pause wherever they are at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day for a minute of silence to remember and honor those who have died in service to the nation.

At 3pm on Monday, all on campus paused for a Moment of Remembrance and reflection for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. In addition, the staff of Twelve Oaks provided certificates of appreciation to active duty members currently in our care and served a special meal to honor the day.

There is such a wide variety of programs at Twelve Oaks. This is the first treatment center I've been to that was able to offer something that worked specifically for me.
