Twelve Oaks Recovery Center participated for the first time in the local Relay for Life event as the team that was “beading for a cure”. The Twelve Oaks team raised money in support of the event by selling necklaces and bracelets that staff members made out of beads. Raffles were held at the facility giving away baskets of goods and even a day off; in addition, several staff made baked goods and sold it to staff and patients for the months leading up to the race. In all, 29 Twelve Oaks staff signed up for the team and raised over $1500 towards the cause.
Volunteers committed to fighting cancer in their communities gather once a year at an American Cancer Society Relay For Life event. One goal is to raise funds for research and care of cancer patients and the other is to raise awareness. Each of the more than 4,800 Relays nationwide is an overnight event that mobilizes communities to celebrate survivors, remember loved ones and fundraise for the fight against cancer. Teams of eight to 15 members seek sponsorship prior to the Relay and gather with tents and sleeping bags with the goal of keeping one person on the track at all times.
Over 2,000 community people came out to participate in the Navarre event with 70 teams represented on the field and over $110,000 was raised for the local American Cancer Society chapter.
