The manic and depressive episodes that define bipolar disorder can significantly impact every facet of an individual’s life. Mania, which can manifest as bouts of extreme energy, poor impulse control, and periods of insomnia, can cause an individual to engage in risky behaviors and prevent a person from making good decisions. Depressive episodes, which include emotional lows comprised of feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, and sadness, carry the potential to hinder an individual’s ability to engage in activities that were once enjoyed and cause him or her to experience thoughts of suicide and engage in self-harm. If left untreated, those with this mental health condition may turn to the use and abuse of substances and make the resulting negative effects even more cumbersome and complex.

As a leading provider of chemical dependency treatment, we, at Twelve Oaks Recovery Center, are equipped to care for men and women who are struggling with substance abuse and addiction and a myriad of co-occurring mental illnesses, such as bipolar disorder. Our expertly-trained staff of professionals understands the unique needs of those suffering from addiction and bipolar disorder and are prepared to treat our patients in the most effective manner possible. In choosing our rehab center to recover and heal, you or your loved one will no longer be burdened by the devastating symptoms of bipolar disorder and the powerful grips of addiction.

Helping a Loved One

Helping a Loved One or Family Member Get Bipolar Disorder Treatment

Close friends and family members of an individual grappling with bipolar disorder are often unsure as to what role they can play in helping the person they care about get the treatment he or she needs. Especially when that individual is also struggling with an addiction to substances at the same time as untreated bipolar disorder symptoms, those closest to that individual often feel as though their efforts to assist him or her are futile. And while you, a concerned friend or family member, may have tried to assist your loved one in taking the steps towards healing and recovery in the past, there are some things that you can still do to help your loved during this tumultuous time. Consider the following:

  • Learn all that you can about bipolar disorder, addiction, and how these two concerns can impact one another.
  • Collaborate with other loved ones to establish a safety plan that details what steps should be taken if your loved one is in need of immediate mental health care or emergency services due to an overdose.
  • Talk with your loved one about what he or she is going through. Be empathic and try to understand what he or she is needing from you and why he or she may be apprehensive about seeking treatment.
  • Research treatment options that meet your loved one’s needs and share your findings with him or her.
  • Assist your loved one in reaching out to treatment centers to learn more about their services and the process for beginning treatment.
  • Encourage your loved one to seek care and communicate your intention of how you will be there for him or her during his or her time in treatment.
  • Offer to go with your loved one to any tours or assessments for admission, as this is a great way to show your own support.

Lastly, it is imperative that you seek your own support. You, as a friend or family member, have likely been impacted by your loved one’s mental illness and substance abuse and require your own support and healing. Consult with professionals, consider joining a support group, engage in counseling services, or find solace and support in other loved ones, and you will be able to progress towards a happier life while the person you care about heals and recovers as well.

Why Consider Treatment

Why Consider Treatment for Bipolar Disorder at Twelve Oaks Recovery Center near Pensacola, Florida

Given the fact that the symptoms of bipolar disorder can be so severe, it is imperative that an individual receive treatment in order to stabilize his or her fluctuating moods. It is not uncommon for men and women to grapple with several adverse effects when this mental illness remains untreated. Discord among loved ones, declining occupational performance or inability to secure/maintain employment, and an overall deterioration of mental health are likely when care is not received. Additionally, those who suffer from untreated bipolar disorder often turn to the use and abuse of substances in order to cope with the symptoms they are experiencing. When this occurs, the vicious cycle of substance abuse can lead to the development of an addiction and cause the onset of a whole host of additional negative outcomes. Physical health concerns, an ever-present risk of overdose, and the drastic worsening of bipolar disorder symptoms have a high probability of occurring when an addiction exists alongside bipolar disorder. However, what is important to keep in mind is that bipolar disorder and chemical dependency can be successfully treated, thus significantly improving a person’s health and life overall.

Types of Treatment

Types of Bipolar Disorder Treatment Offered at Twelve Oaks Recovery Center near Pensacola, Florida

At Twelve Oaks Recovery Center, we have spent more than 30 years serving Florida with premiere rehab treatment to men and women, aged 18 and older, who are struggling with chemical dependency concerns and co-occurring conditions, including bipolar disorder. Beautifully located on the Emerald Coast of Florida on the Navarre Sound, Twelve Oaks offers patients a sense of tranquility as they work towards overcoming their addictions and learning to manage the symptoms of bipolar disorder. Our dedicated and experienced treatment professionals are uniquely prepared to guide patients through the transformations that will allow them to pursue happier, healthier, and more productive futures. Throughout their time spent at Twelve Oaks, patients can benefit from developing an enhanced sense of self-worth as they learn to create realistic life goals and make healthy lifestyle adjustments.

As part of our mission to provide comprehensive care that is tailored to meet the unique needs of each of our patients, Twelve Oaks has specialized treatment tracks that may be incorporated into a patient’s overall plan of care. During their initial assessment, patients’ appropriateness for placement in any of these tracks will be determined.

In addition to these three specialized treatment tracks, Twelve Oaks Recovery Center offers a variety of therapeutic interventions that may be included into a patient’s individualized treatment plan when receiving care for bipolar disorder. These interventions are described briefly in the following:

Medically monitored detoxification: When patients come to Twelve Oaks Recovery Center and have drugs or alcohol in their systems, they may benefit from undergoing detoxification prior to beginning the therapeutic process. Under the direction of an ASAM certified addictionologist, Twelve Oaks provides high-level detoxification services that are monitored by nursing staff 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Each patient’s need for detox will be determined on a case-by-case basis, taking into account his or her medical history and all of his or her presenting concerns.

Medication management: In order to most appropriately treat the distressing symptoms of bipolar disorder, certain psychotropic medications will likely be incorporated into a patient’s treatment plan. The use of any medication, however, is always determined based on the specific needs of each individual. Patients meet with a psychiatrist on an as-needed basis in order to determine the appropriateness of any medication used, as well as to make any changes that may be necessary for ensuring the therapeutic effectiveness of that medication.

Individual therapy: Patients are given the opportunity to meet with an individual counselor at a minimum of once each week for individual therapy sessions. These sessions are designed to be a time for patients to process through their time in treatment, while also addressing any concerns that may arise. Additionally, counselors frequently use these individual sessions to incorporate experiential therapy options into a patient’s therapeutic process. Examples of the various experiential options that counselors may have patients engage in include:

  • Recreational activities
  • Beach activities (such as swimming and kayaking)
  • Psychodrama
  • Yoga
  • Art
  • Guided imagery

Family therapy: At Twelve Oaks, we know how instrumental family members can be in helping their loved ones manage and/or recover from the symptoms of bipolar disorder. For this reason, we provide family therapy sessions for all patients at least once during the time they spend in treatment with us. If patients would benefit from additional family therapy sessions, those arrangements will be made by their counselors.

Group therapy: Patients participate in a number of group therapy sessions throughout the duration of their time at Twelve Oaks. During the week, patients take part in three educational groups and two process groups every day. On Saturdays and Sundays, there are five educational groups held, including recreational therapy on Saturday. On Sundays, a spirituality group is held, and patients also have the option of attending a local church as part of that group. Within the educational groups, there are a number of different topics covered, including the following:

  • Communication skills
  • Spirituality enrichment study
  • Addiction as a brain disease
  • Big Book study
  • Stages of change
  • Relapse prevention
  • Dealing with stress and emotions
  • Self-esteem
  • Co-dependence
  • Conflict resolution
  • Anger management
  • Working the 12-Step program
  • Triggers and cravings
  • 10 principles of change

Group therapy sessions are also often used to incorporate experiential activities into the therapeutic milieu for patients. Examples of activities that patients may participate in as part of these experiential options can include the low ropes course, yoga, psychodrama, guided imagery, art, and recreational therapy. Beach activities are also frequently included in group therapy sessions, including swimming, kayaking, volleyball, and time for patients to gather together around a bonfire.

At Twelve Oaks Recovery Center, we know that overcoming chemical dependency while also learning how to manage the symptoms of bipolar disorder can be a long process that does not simply end with the completion of residential inpatient treatment. Because of this, we offer step-down treatment options for patients who are in need of comprehensive continuing care services. These step-down options include our partial hospitalization program (PHP) and our intensive outpatient program (IOP). Our staff works closely with patients to determine what the most appropriate next step is for them in their recovery process and then works to ensure that follow-up care and support is established and accessible prior to their leaving treatment.

If you or a loved one is battling the symptoms of bipolar disorder while also struggling with an addiction to drugs or alcohol, the suffering does not have to continue. Allow the caring and compassionate staff at Twelve Oaks Recovery Center to help show you the way to a brighter tomorrow.
